One of Davis’s earliest domestic projects in this style was Knoll, a distinguished Gothic Revival residence located in Tarrytown, New York built for former New York City mayor William Paulding (1770–1854). The house was later expanded by Davis for New York businessman George Merritt (1807–1873) and renamed Lyndhurst. Of all of its distinctive elements, the gingerbread engraved wooden trim (known as bargeboard) is perhaps the most identifiable feature of the style.
